Art and Design

CURRICULUM INTENT STATEMENT

At Malmesbury Park we believe that Art is a creative skill that children instinctively use as a means of expression and to communicate ideas and feelings. The teaching of art stimulates and encourages creativity and imagination through visual, tactile and sensory experiences. It provides a unique way of understanding and responding to the world and can be used to shape the environment. Teaching children a variety of art skills underpins our art lessons. They experience different painting techniques, from colour mixing to creating tone and shade, as well as embedding key pencil skills such as cross-hatching and perspective. Each year, the group focusses on different key artists which link to the children’s art topics.

Aims:
  • Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
