Inclusion at Malmesbury Park

Malmesbury Park is proud to be an inclusive school. We strive to ensure that every child's needs are known individually and catered for.

For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, we believe that early intervention is key to ensure that ‘closing the gap’ strategies are employed to allow children to catch up with their peer group.

We enjoy working closely with parents and carers and access a wide range of outside agencies to enable all staff to make the best possible provision.

We are privileged to have a Local Authority based provision at our school. There is the RIGGs Unit for children with autism. We have 12 spaces in our provision which is funded by the local authority and children are placed by the BCP SEND team.

Autism Provision

Riggs at Malmesbury Park
Riggs at Malmesbury Park supports children from Reception to Year 6 with a primary diagnosis of autism who require a bespoke learning environment and personalised curriculum in order to make progress.

The Riggs provision consists of two classrooms: one supporting Early Years and Key Stage 1 which is named the Lancaster class and one supporting Key Stage 2 pupils, which is named the Riggs Class. Each class is led by a Class Teacher and supported by teaching assistants who are highly trained and experienced in working with autistic children.

Placement within the Riggs Provision is specified in Section F of a child’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Pupils benefit from specialist teaching, with an inclusive and personalised curriculum planned to meet individual needs while reflecting the expectations of the mainstream curriculum.

Children learning in Riggs and Lancaster have access to specialist facilities, including the Bodyshop, which features equipment such as a swing, hammock and trampoline to support the development of gross and fine motor skills. In addition the children have access to a Sensory Room which provides a calm space for regulation, relaxation and supported social interaction.

All pupils in Riggs are linked to a mainstream class and are expected to access and participate in mainstream learning and activities on a daily basis where appropriate. While Riggs and Lancaster offer a highly personalised curriculum, it is designed to complement and align with the mainstream provision. As part of the compatibility criteria, pupils are expected to be able to engage with mainstream learning, benefit from interactions with peers and take part in wider school life.

Admission to our Autism Provision

Admission to The Hub is decided by the Local Authority SEND panel followed by consultation with the school and the child meeting our compatibility criteria.

Curriculum Map

The children in both Riggs and Lancaster classes follow some of the mainstream curriculum.  Adaptations are made so they can access the content at the appropriate level.
