RSHE

RELATIONSHIPS, SEX and HEALTH EDUCATION (RSHE) AT MALMESBURY PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL
What is RSHE?

RSHE is Relationships, Sex Education and Health Education. It is a statutory requirement for all schools in England to teach RSHE.  The purpose of the RSHE curriculum is to provide all pupils with opportunities to:

  • Develop confidence and responsibility and make the most of their abilities
  • Prepare to play an active role as citizens through developing skills for living and valuing themselves and respecting others.
  • Develop a healthy lifestyle
  • Contribute to their community and the wider world and becoming morally and socially responsible
  • Develop good relationships and respect the differences between people
Our RSHE programme

The content of the RSHE curriculum is taught through weekly RSHE lessons, supported by assemblies (whole school and year group), visiting speakers and additional sessions for the sex education elements of the programme in Years 5 and 6. We also support and take part in national events including Children’s Mental Health Week, Anti-Bulling Week and Safer Internet Day.

Why JIGSAW?

At Malmesbury Park Primary Academy School we use ‘JIGSAW – the mindfulness approach to PSHE’, to deliver our RSHE curriculum.

“Jigsaw holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant RSHE within a whole-school approach.  Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness, allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.”

We are confident that the Jigsaw Programme covers all aspects of Relationships, Sex Education and Health Education in an age-appropriate way.

CURRICULUM INTENT STATEMENT

At Malmesbury Park, we are committed to promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural and physical development of our pupils. We believe RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education) to be an essential element in the preparation of our children for adult life. The RSHE curriculum provides learning opportunities and experiences which will enable pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary for personal and social responsibility. At Malmesbury Park, we use the JIGSAW scheme of work.

Aims:
  • Develop a sense of self-worth and a respect for the dignity of life.
  • Encourage children to communicate confidently and express their feelings appropriately.
  • Develop healthy, safer lifestyles.
  • Prepare the child for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Within RSHE we recognise:

Health Education – Children engaging in activities to promote their physical and mental well-being.

Citizenship – Encouraging children to take a responsible role in society, including the development of the children’s awareness of their personal safety and the process by which they can seek help and information as well as learning the behaviour expected of them as responsible citizens.

Human Relationships – Information by which the child is able to become aware of himself/herself as a person and understanding that the process of development is a natural part of growing up.

Relationships and Sex Education – We define Relationships and Sex Education as the curriculum used to encompass many aspects of the Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) curriculum as well as contributing to promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils.

British Values – These are continually reinforced through RSHE, RE, collective worship, behaviour management and other strands of the curriculum.

Teaching PSHE is not confined to a specific slot on the timetable. It is a combination of discrete curriculum time, specialised assemblies, through pastoral care and guidance, visiting speakers, cross-curricular coverage and delivery through whole school events (i.e. internet safety days.)

Aims:

  • Actively promote fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs;
  • Promote tolerance and respect of all faiths (and those with no faith), cultures and lifestyles through effective spiritual, moral, social and cultural development;
  • Make the most of their abilities;
  • Play an active, positive role as citizens in a democratic society;
  • Understand and develop good relationships with each other and all members of the school and wider community;
  • Have respect for each other and the differences between people;
  • Develop a healthy and safe lifestyle;
  • Make informed choices regarding personal and social issues – be responsible members of the school community.
CHARACTER EDUCATION

The four aspects of Character Education are:

  • The ability to remain motivated and persevere when setbacks are encountered;
  • The learning of positive moral attributes known as ‘virtues’ such as courage, honesty, generosity, integrity, humility and a sense of justice;
  • The acquisition of social confidence and the ability to listen attentively to the views of others, behave with courtesy and speak persuasively to an audience;
  • An appreciation of the importance of long-term commitments.

Character Education contributes to forming children ready to take their place in the world. At Malmesbury Park, we provide a rich, broad and balanced curriculum and promote the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of children. We prepare children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

All staff subscribe to the same ethos and have high expectations for exemplary behaviour. Staff are consistent in implementing the behaviour policy and there is a calm atmosphere throughout the school.  The outstanding pupil behaviour springs from the school’s ethos and values.

We provide opportunities to help children explore and express their character and build the skills they need for resilience and empathy. Character Education is taught through assemblies and across the curriculum, including in dedicated Character Education sessions within the RSHE scheme of work.
