Design and Technology

CURRICULUM INTENT STATEMENT

At Malmesbury Park, we believe Design Technology is about applying knowledge and skills to solve practical problems. It is a purposeful activity in response to real needs and situations. We support our pupils in applying their knowledge and skills, to the best of their ability, to succeed in designing and making a good product using a range of materials and tools. Children follow the design process of ‘Plan, Make and Evaluate' to design and make their products. They are able to research their topic and design in the planning stage in order to improve their ideas.

As part of the DT curriculum, cooking and nutrition is a key component. The children gain experience each year through the planned cooking opportunities so that they learn about healthy lifestyles, seasonal ingredients and cooking skills. We cook and eat the things we grow. Children are excited by Design Technology, look forward to their next topic and become increasingly ambitious in their designs.

Aims:
  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
  • Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
